PHOT40 – A comparison of Evans, Lange, Parks

It took a while for me to land on something that worked across all three photographers. it was harder than I thought it would be. I tried nurses, hospitals, suburbia (that’s more post-WWII I think). Finally I landed on portraits on families.

Lange and Evans present what feel like staged photos of a still family, save for the small child in each one. It feels very stoic. The subjects appear poor, these are photos of poverty and the downtrodden. Thinking back to Lange’s “Migrant Mother” this feels on point.

Now looking at Parks’s photos of the family, we see something more vibrant and even optimistic. While difficulty may exist in this family’s home, you an also sense a spirit which isn’t found in the formers’ photos.

Specifically to the topics suggested for this write-up: The Lange and Evans photos potray victims of the time. Parks’s photo provides a look into surviving a difficult period.
